On 14 November 1977 the translator died. Then they changed his book.
In 1972, Macmillan published in New York A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada’s Bhagavad-gītā As It Is. It sold for five years. Sceptical professors put it on their courses.
In 1983, six years after his death, another edition came out. Same title, same author on the cover. Inside, thousands of words changed.
One example, so you can see the shape of it
In the commentary on verse 2.13, the soul stopped being forgotten and became forgetful.
One word. The difference between being lost by circumstance and being careless by choice. Between tragedy and negligence.
In the same verse, “the self-realized soul” became “a sober person”.
Neither change is a typo.
What’s in the book
The full pattern, chapter by chapter. Twenty-two times, intimate language turned into formal titles. Plain English turned into technical terminology: a man who wrote for the taxi driver and the woman doing her shopping began demanding philosophical credentials.
How it was done, who did it, and what was said when somebody asked.
And what happened outside the United States: Moscow, Brazil, London. The same operation translated into other languages, with the original quietly taken out of circulation.
What it isn’t
It isn’t a pamphlet. The studies cited are real peer-reviewed research by authors you can look up.
It doesn’t ask you to believe me. Every verse comparison, every figure and every transcript can be checked on your own: the original 1972 edition is at vedabase.cc. The revised one is in any bookshop, which is exactly the problem.
The book uses a researcher as a narrative thread so it can be read. It says so on the first page: that character is a composite of real testimony. The data isn’t.
