File 1. The witch
In our parapsychology research group we had an impressive range of activities. We got into the occult, and that included witchcraft, white magic and black magic. And it turns out that in our town, Mataró, we met a very old lady from Brazil. Well, she was Catalan, but she had lived many years in Brazil. And she was a witch.
My friend and I used to go to her house. And curiously we went at night, to top it all off. She was a white witch, but she looked exactly the part: a rather wrinkled lady, with big, turquoise-green eyes. And of course that was her subject. So we went to her house.
She lived alone, in a flat in Mataró. And we, who must have been fourteen or fifteen, went to her house at night to talk to her. It wasn’t an interview, as that’s usually understood, but we tried to do everything in a professional way: investigate, ask questions. It was a relaxed conversation. She told us about her experiences in Brazil. And the flat was quite dark.
We went in at night. I don’t even know how we did it now, because it should have scared us. But since we were studying all those subjects, when you know things they don’t scare you as much; it’s when you don’t know them that they scare you. We knew, for example, about the astral planes, about spirits and the different kinds, about how they can affect our plane. We studied magic, the procedures of the old books, and so on.
Well, after the conversation, which was already at night — it was ten o’clock — we had to let our families know we’d be home a bit late. In those days, a kid being out at certain hours wasn’t normal, so we had to say we were doing something and would be home late. So at ten or eleven, when we’d finished talking with the lady for a couple of hours, we’d say: well, now let’s put the lights off, see if we spot a spirit, see if we spot a ghost. And we had our experiences there.
This lady was a white witch. She wasn’t there to do harm. But even so she was very mystical. It was impressive to see her. We were standing in front of a real witch. And we loved it.
