At fourteen I rented an office to investigate ghosts

A small office, a real one, rented with what a few schoolkids had between them. We gave it initials: I.P.U., Investigación en Parapsicología y Ufología — Research in Parapsychology and Ufology. Santiago Jubany and me.

It had started in 1973, with a teacher who did something nobody did back then: he let us choose the subject of our project. In Franco’s Spain that was close to subversive. I chose Tibet.

After that we didn’t stop. Haunted houses. Real witches, the kind who don’t charge and have bright emerald eyes. Past-life regressions. Tarot, ouija, astrology, palm reading. Whatever came up.

People laugh at that list. I don’t.

Because out of all of it I got something that has served me ever since: the habit of going to look. Not reading about the haunted house. Going to the house. Not having an opinion about the witch. Sitting down in front of her and asking.

In 1975 we walked into the first Hare Krishna temple in Spain. With Franco still alive, it was the strangest thing you could do here.

I knew that was for me. It took me six years to dare.

Fifty years later I’m still doing the same thing, only with texts. I go and look. I don’t trust what I’m told. I write it down.

Everything I’ve written down is in a card file. That’s where what I send you every day comes from.

Tomorrow I’ll tell you how I left home.

All the cards
